PLEASE MAKE SURE TO SCROLL DOWN THE PAGE AND READ LAST WEEK'S MESSAGE REGARDING OUR 100'S DAY CELEBRATION. THERE IS AN AT HOME PROJECT THAT HAS BEEN ASSIGNED FOR ALL STUDENTS FOR WEDNESDAY MARCH 2 AND THURSDAY MARCH 3. IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS REGARDING THE PROJECT PLEASE EMAIL YOUR CHILD'S CLASSROOM TEACHER.
Sight Words and Kid Writing
We are currently working on recognizing sight words and sounding out words in the classroom.
Sight words are words that your child will have to memorize because they cannot be sounded out (e.g. can, see, am, love, like). These words are recognized by sight.
When your child sounds out words, they are writing down the sounds that they hear (which is normally the beginning and ending sounds of the word or the consonants). The word will not be spelled correctly and this is okay. The classroom teachers tell the children that this is called 'kid writing' because they are kids and they are learning how to spell. We are asking parents to please not spell the words for your child. Please only have them write down the sounds that they hear.
New Homework Expectations
- Classroom teachers would like to see students adding details to their pictures. Students will be familiar with this because they have been adding details to the pictures they are drawing in their journals at school. We are asking that the students add 2-3 details to each picture.
- Have your child use 3-5 different colours when colouring their pictures. Please have your child use crayons or pencil crayons. Do not use markers because it is difficult for your child to stay in the lines when colouring their picture.
- Have your child write a sentence about the picture they have drawn. We are asking the children to use the sight words that have been taught in class and also sound out the word they need for their sentence.
Make the sentence simple. In the classroom the students have been introduced to the sentence starters 'I can, I see, I like, I love, I am, It is'. Encourage your child to use capitals, periods and finger spaces.
** The sight words that have been taught in class are posted on the right hand side of the BLOG under 'Sight Words' and also listed on the homework description. Every week the students are introduced to 2-3 sight words. You can review the sight words that are taught as part of the nightly homework.**
Please remember that parents should not be completing any portion of the homework for your child (this includes the drawings). Classroom teachers are not looking for perfection, only a best effort. If parents are completing the pictures this will impact your child's ability to complete their work independently at school.
Thank you for your cooperation and support!
