IMPORTANT HOMEWORK INFORMATION

There have been two changes to the homework starting this term.

1. Addition of Sight Words

Each week the children will be introduced to three sight words. Sight words are words that cannot be sounded out. They are words that are memorized. As part of the homework assignment children can review the sight words nightly. The sight words will be posted on the Homework Description and under the heading 'Sight Words' found on the right hand side of the BLOG. A link has been added for parents to print out the lists and flash cards for both the Pre-Primer and Primer sight words that will be taught in class.

If your child is struggling with learning the letter names and sounds that are being taught in class please do not review the sight words. The classroom teachers are asking that you focus on reviewing the letter names and sounds with your child. It is extremely important that your child have a solid understanding of this concept before introducing sight words as part of the nightly homework.

2. Drawing Detailed Pictures

As part of the weekly homework the children have been asked to draw a picture of something that starts with the letter of the week. The classroom teachers are now asking for your child to draw a detailed picture. A detailed picture or 'WOW' picture is a picture that includes 3-5 different colours and 3 or more additional details. Please see the classroom rubric posted below:

The children have been introduced to this rubric and have been practicing adding detail to their journal pictures at school.

Here are some examples of detailed pictures that were completed in this week's homework. These pictures have lots of colour and detail!! They look amazing!

If you have any questions regarding sight words or detailed pictures please contact your child's classroom teacher.

We thank you for your cooperation and support!
